How a solar dealer can evaluate an EPC and installation partner

A dealer relationship affects your customers, your reps, and your own operating commitments. A price comparison is useful, but it should sit beside evidence of how the proposed partnership would work.

THE QUICK ANSWER

Evaluate an EPC partner using verified market scope, a clear acceptance process, documented project work, named communication owners, and complete written economics. An attractive redline alone does not establish fulfillment capacity or a suitable partnership.

Verify the scope you actually need

List the markets, project types, and services your team wants to sell. Ask the proposed partner to confirm which are supported and what additional review is required. Keep current coverage separate from planned expansion.

Ask who performs and supervises each part of the work and how qualifications are verified. Do not infer statewide or multistate operating capacity from a recruiting page. A market guide identifies an area for discussion, not a commitment to accept every project there.

Review evidence without overgeneralizing

Public project examples can help you understand the kind of work a company has completed. For example, REC’s customer spotlight identifies Origin as the installer on a commercial solar project at Mahajan Medical Center in Clearwater. That is a specific project reference, not proof of every market’s current capacity.

Ask for examples relevant to your proposed customers and operating model. Discuss how the team handles scope changes and difficult handoffs as well as completed installations. Avoid treating marketing images or testimonials as a substitute for the actual partnership terms.

Walk through a difficult project

Use a hypothetical example: a submitted sale needs a scope revision after review. Who informs the homeowner, revises the documents, updates the rep, and confirms the next step? Ask how the dealer can see the current owner and blocker.

Discuss what happens after installation when a customer has a question. A named process for service and escalation helps your team set accurate expectations before making a sale. Clarify what remains the dealer’s responsibility.

Compare the complete financial arrangement

Request the proposed pricing, adders, payment milestones, cancellation terms, and responsibility for paying your reps. Ask how project adjustments are communicated and how a disagreement is reviewed. Use the same example project when comparing proposals.

Introduce your team through the dealer application with current size, actual coverage, and your lead-generation model. Keep customer lists and confidential business records out of the initial form. A reviewed operating agreement should come before promises to your sales team.

Common questions

Does the lowest redline always mean the best partnership?

No. Compare the full economics and operating responsibilities using the same project assumptions.

Is a recruiting application a dealer agreement?

No. It starts a review of fit, coverage, and proposed terms.
